Did you ever stop and think about how much you eat at every meal? Or how big the portion sizes are at restaurants? Do you eat everything on your plate or take a doggie bag home?
Do you go to a fast food drive thru for a meal and then have them super size it?
The portion sizes in the U. S. tend to be larger than other places. My nieces were amazed when they visited us last year just how big the portion sizes were. They are from Canada and both worked in the restaurant business there.
Want to get your portion sizes under control? Here is what some experts have said:
- Leave something on your plate at every meal
- Get use to reading labels, especially the fine print.
- Measure your food.
- Cut high calorie foods like cheese and chocolate into smaller bit sized pieces. You’ll fool your brain into thinking you ate more.
- Use smaller plates. You’ll serve yourself less and feel like you have eaten more. Cornell University nutritional researcher, Brian Wansink, PHD says “switching from a 12” to 10” plate will lead you to eat 22% fewer calories at a meal.”
- Stop eating before you are full. If you rest for a few minutes you’ll notice you are FULL.
- Eat slowly, chew your food instead of gobbling it down. Savor every bite!
- Don’t eat in front of the TV or computer; where you tend to eat mindlessly.
- When attending a function with a buffet meal, stay away from the buffet table. This is another place you will nibble mindlessly.
- Don’t eat on the run.
The first step toward healthy eating and getting a handle over those expanding love handles is portion control.
